Megan Roche talks about the realities of working at a daily local news outlet and shares insights from her career.
I’ve had founders, nonprofit leaders, independent operators, and consultants on the podcast so far but I’ve yet to talk with a current, boots on the ground journalist at a local media publication.
That changes today, as I had a great conversation with the amazing Megan Roche. Megan is a senior multimedia journalist for Local Daily Media in Williamsburg, VA.
On the podcast, we discuss how Megan fell in love with journalism when she took an intro to communications class in college and then got involved with the on-campus radio station, hosting her own talk show.
Since that time she’s been all in on her career in journalism, spending over a decade working in the field since graduating.
We discuss Megan’s recent Path to Paris series about Virginia athletes in the ’24 Paris Olympics, which is an amazing example of taking local stories and framing them on a global stage.
Megan explains how her work life and the businesses she’s worked for have changed over the past decade amid the challenges that local media has faced, and how she’s had to deal with some of the more challenging aspects of being a reporter at a daily publication such as burnout.
She also talks about lessons she’s learned from years in the industry, such as the fact that celebrities and other high profile people are really just ordinary people for the most part.
