How Claudia Amaro went from being a stranger in a strange land to launching a local news outlet that serves a community that was previously ignored
Claudia Amaro moved to US from Mexico in late 80’s when she was just in middle school. From a young age she loved journalism, playing as a news anchor and actually enjoying the commercials she saw on TV.
Claudia grew up, and she eventually settled in Wichita, KS. After settling in, she realized that no one in the Spanish speaking community knew about what was happening in the area.
This lead her to starting a local newspaper in 2004 which was so popular that she actually had people paying her for it. Unfortunately at this time, Claudia had no business experience and the project shut down after less than a year.
After completing her college education and starting a family, Claudia began reporting local news for a friends’ new radio station. The name of the show was Planeta Venus, and it eventually became so popular within the community that she turned the brand into its own platform.
Planeta Venus is now an audio, digital, and print outlet serving the Spanish speaking community in Wichita.
On this episode of Small Press, Big Ideas, I spoke with Claudia about knowing your audience, how launching a print edition of Planeta Venus actually made sense for Claudia’s specific audience, and how the newsroom is innovating and striving to grow into a profitable business.
